  2. I love it. I wonder if I could do that in my kitchen. It has layers of old wallpaper that has been painted pale yellow. I hate it!!!! There are just too many other projects going for me to tackle ripping down that wallpaper and redoing the damage and repainting. Do you mind telling me how you did this? Was it fairly easy? Would you do it again? How expensive. LOL...lots of questions. Thanks for any advice.

  3. Trying again to leave message telling you how fab this is. Do you mind telling me how difficult it was and the process? I have hideous wallpaper in my kitchen that the previous owners sloppily painted over and will be such a bear to remove. Maybe this could be an option until I have more time to work with it?

  4. Kara, came over from Rhoda's. I think your re-covered walls came out VERY nicely. What did you use to finish off your raw edges- can't tell from the pics, because they do not enlarge. Are those upholstery tacks? :-)Sue

  5. Wow! That is awesome! What a great idea for some wonderful texture! I'm wondering, did you just adhere it to the wall with tacks? Was it pretty easy? I know you're probably getting tired of reading these same questions, but it's just so original!

  6. Look great! My only concern is... is this easy to clean, or no? I ask because my toddlers tend to fling yogurt and such things on the wall. So I don't know if this would be for me or not. But I love it and it looks fab. Also, what was your total cost, with fabric and nailheads?

  7. Kara, I really love this idea. It adds texture just like grasscloth wallpaper would to. And yes, I'm wondering how easy it was too. I know with my cabinet backing, it sagged some, did you use any sort of adhesive. It really looks pretty! Thanks for joining the party. And welcome to blogging!

  9. I am totally blushing from all of your wonderful comments. Some answers. Stapled to wall--pull REALLY tight. Extra large thumb tacks (found in quilting). Binding or tape of some kind found with trims. All purchased at Hobby Lobby for well under $100 well probably around $50.

  15. I absolutely love this! What I'd like to know is how did you adhere this? What type of glue did you use? I also love what you did on the outer edge and am wondering if you used the kind of tape that's used in upholstery or what?

This is a very cute use of fabric for wallpaper, and you did an outstanding job! I have a bedroom that is making me a a wee bit stressed, and I'm thinking of something like this... but I have a bit of a texture on the wall. Also, did you use the odor-free burlap you can find online, or is this regular burlap?

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  16. I love the idea - and the execution is great too. Love the nailhead detail all the way around. Did you sew the burlap before putting it on the long walls? I think this is a great idea for a breakfast room - bedroom, any area where texture is needed. You certainly added a great deal of interest to this room, great job! And now I'm off to see more of your great house (I hope!) I caught a peak of your green living room from the third picture. Beautiful ...

  17. Visiting from the burlap party...great job on these walls! I may try this in my master bath at the lake...got most of the wallpaper off, but not smoothly! Plus this adds great texture! Thanks for sharing.

  19. I adore your burlap wall! So beautiful and textural. Oh, and I'm sure a ton of work!

By the way, I respectfully disagree with Lisa. Don't paint that hutch, at least not the whole thing! It contrasts beautifully against that wall. The back would be pretty painted. I think the rest is fantastic in its' wood finish.

Sorry, unsolicited advice. Do what makes you happy!

  20. Oh, Kara! You just made my day, seriously!!!!

We are in a rental that has paneled walls that I can't paint and this is a PERFECT solution!

Thanks so much for the idea, I love it!:)

  24. You clever, clever girl! I just LOVE it! Would love to see close up pictures and maybe some how-to tips. This is a "gotta do it"! Thanks! Deborah

  25. Oh my GOSH, this is beautiful! I just found this blog after being linked from a few different places. I would love to hear more about the details on how you did this. A close up of the seams would be great! I am soooo doing this!

  27. Kara, I'm doing this in my dining room!!! Love it!!! One questions...are your tacks brushed nickel or smooth? I can't seem to find brushed...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Sarah, Thanks for visiting. My tacks are smooth, I like the shine they give and I am thinking about adding more tacks. This is a very easy treatment to do but be sure and pull really tight or it will sag....kinda like my body!;)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Ha! I know all about the sagging...:)

Thanks for clarifying that - I will definitely go with the smooth. One more thing I forgot to ask (and then I'll leave you alone!)...what exactly did you use for the trim? I got some quilters tape but I don't know if that is good for long term use. Is yours fabric? Thanks so much!!!

  30. Kara, I'm about a quarter of the way through my burlaping project and it's harder than I thought! The biggest struggles - cutting around outlets (I'm doing it below our chair rail) and getting the tacks evenly spaced when there are different lengths and heights of the walls! How long did it take you to finish? I've got a long way to go!!! Still love it, though!!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I didn't have any outlets but the windows were very tricky...I can see all the imperfections but I keep my mouth shut when someone says it looks great.;) I cut a piece of cardboard as a template for my tack measurement. Tacks were the most time consuming and I am thinking of adding more.

  32. This is beautiful!! I am covering an ottoman in burlap, in the middle of my project and just bought 6 more yards for another project. As I'm searching for tips, I've seen some mention of burlap containing formaldehyde???? i see you did this a while ago, have you had any issues, have you been sick or anything? I'm just torn if I should finish this project and the other one.

  33. Love the look, feel, and simplicity of the burlap. Just one question...? What technique/secrets did you use to get the burlap to hang so nicely;please explain?
    Thanks, Well done!

  34. Anony #1-- I have had no issues with the smell. I think if you wash it first you won't have any problems. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  35. Thanks for visiting my blog. I have tried writing a tutorial but it just turns out clunky. I stapled mine to the wall and covered the edged with binding tape. I didn't wash mine first but wish I had...lots of fuzz. You could use fabric starch to "glue" it to the wall like a wallpaper. I think that might actually be easier but if you do use a simple stapler be sure to pull very tight it will be saggy if you don't. This really is a great easy look. Please send me a pic if you do your walls.

  36. Where did you purchase your burlap? Is there a difference in the kinds? If so what kind did you use?

    ReplyDelete
  37. I bought my burlap at Hobby Lobby and used a 40% coupon so around $1.50/yd. My whole project was about $50.
I do think you can buy a higher quality burlap but I am very pleased with mine...and I am all about the bargain.LOL In total I spent arout $50 for the whole project. Also be aware the sun with turn the burlap darker--more yellow tanish.

  38. I love this! I just googled "burlap wallpaper" because I plan on doing it in my foyer. yours looks fab! thanks for sharing -denise

  39. I finally finished my project and I love it! Luckily, curtains cover some of the problem areas! One thing I would suggest to anyone starting this project is to buy ALL the burlap you need at once, if possible. I went back three times and each time the cut came from a new bolt and each one had a slight color variation. My husband swears you can't tell if you aren't looking, but I know! However, I was not about to start tearing down what I'd already invested so much time into. Also, be extra careful around windows. With the stretching, correct measuring becomes tricky, especially if you want to avoid any seams.

Thanks so much, Kara, for this amazing inspiration!!!

  40. Thanks for this incredible idea. I've been looking for an efficient way to brighten my dark color wooded wall for a month now.

  41. Kara, how did you connect / seam each row of fabric? Did you sew it together or just staple one row on top of another?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Just saw this on AT. Love the look. Is there a way to do this without the tacks? We have a mid-century modern thing going on in our home, I'm not sure the tacks would mesh well but I love the texture of this.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Is that burlap or muslin? Either way, it is wonderful looking. I would like to do something similar. Where did you buy the material?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks Shirley, yea it is burlap and I purchased it at hobby lobby using a coupon the total cost was around $50.
